Lady Hugoline and her merchant husband, Rotrou, presided over the banquet. Near them was Bishop Jean, whose idea it had been for Ailith to sing for King Richard. The bishop looked from Ailith to Richard and back again. The bishop seemed worried. So did Hugoline and Rotrou. They had probably never had a king in their hall, and they wanted him to enjoy the entertainment, which it appeared that he was not doing.

King Richard sat with his elbow on the high table, seemingly bored, with his chin in his hand and his eyes closed. Once, his ice-blue eyes opened, and they bored into Ailith’s eyes with an intensity that almost caused her to lose the thread of her song. Then they closed again.

Richard’s pretty wife, Berengaria, sat next to him. Ailith felt sorry for Berengaria, who managed to look both queenly and bewildered at the same time. She was so obviously in love with Richard, and he so obviously cared nothing for her. Berengaria still wasn’t pregnant, and Ailith couldn’t understand why. Either Richard hadn’t tried, or Berengaria was infertile. If she was infertile, Richard should have had the marriage annulled and found someone who could provide him an heir. If he hadn’t tried, why not? She was certainly attractive enough.
